Secrets from the Agatha Christie Archives
The untold story of how Agatha Christie conquered the serial market with her thrilling mysteries.
Dame Agatha Christie reigns supreme as the ‘Queen of Crime.’ Numerous books have been written about the legendary crime writer, focusing on nearly every aspect of her craft. But until now no one has carried out an in-depth investigation into how she conquered the serial market with her thrilling tales of murder and intrigue. In the UK and US, Agatha Christie’s work was serialized in the most prestigious magazines and newspapers of the day, often under an array of different titles, prior to being published by Collins and Dodd, Mead and Company. Second serial rights could result in a single title being syndicated to over 40 newspapers. Over the decades, numerous records have been lost or destroyed and keeping track of her literary legacy has proved a major challenge for her publishers, literary agents and others until now.Jared Cade, author of the ground-breaking biography Agatha Christie and the Eleven Missing Days, has unearthed a huge plethora of hitherto unknown facts about the timeline of her publishing history that will delight her devotees and enable future generations to write about her work with far greater authority and accuracy than ever before, especially when correlating her publications to the parallels in her life.Illustrated with rare pictures, Secrets from the Agatha Christie Archives is destined to become an essential reference tool for fans, librarians, scholars, antiquarian booksellers, broadcasters and others interested in the making of one of the 20th century’s most beloved writers.

Agatha Christie and the Eleven Missing Days
In December 1926 the celebrated crime writer Agatha Christie disappeared from her home in Berkshire, leaving her car abandoned off a Surrey road. The story was front-page news. She was identified in a Harrogate hotel eleven days later, claiming to be the victim of amnesia caused by a driving accident.Up till now none of her biographers has come up with definitive evidence as to how Agatha Christie spent the days after she went missing or whether her memory loss was genuine.Claims by previous biographers that the writer never gave her own explanation of the incident during her lifetime are in error; in his new book, Jared Cade reproduces Agatha's own written account which gives the reader insight into why she was forced to collude in the family cover-up. He has unearthed startling new evidence, including accounts by Agatha's relatives, that reveal for the first time why she staged the disappearance with the help of a friend and how it all went terribly wrong.Meticulously researched and illustrated with many photographs never before seen, this biography provides the definitive key to the author's life and works.
Praise for Jared Cade
‘Just when you thought you knew everything about Agatha Christie, boom! The new meticulously researched book, Secrets from the Agatha Christie Archives, arrives to prove you wrong’ – Diane Reviews Books
‘I've been called an 'Agatha Christie fan' and even an obsessive on occasion so Secrets from the Agatha Christie Archives from Jared Cade is absolutely perfect for me. The book is a detailed account of Christie's bibliography, including her novels, serialised works, and collections, filled with interesting facts and titbits in each section. Any Christie fan will enjoy this full account of her publishing history and the added information about the publishing process and her experiences just enhances the publication’ – Maria Flaherty
‘A brilliantly researched and highly informative book. An absolutely essential addition to anyone's Christie collection’ – Robin Price
‘An essential reference…. The publishing history of Agatha Christie's novels is extremely complex. Virtually all her books appeared first in serialized form in magazines and newspapers, mostly in the US and often in obscure locations, and there were sometimes important differences between British and US versions. The author has done a wonderful and painstaking job in disentangling their history, and his work is a major achievement. Agatha herself would have found this book essential’ – Keith Manly, curator of Agatha Christie’s library at Greenway house in Devon, England
‘Agatha Christie's greatest mystery was her strange disappearance in December 1926. The already well-known writer's car was found abandoned in Surrey. After vast publicity she was found, claiming to be suffering from amnesia, in a Harrogate hotel. Jared Cade, in a well-researched and attractively written book, unravels the mystery and explains how and why she fled from her husband. Although the book concentrates on this dramatic event, the author shows how echoes of the disappearance turned up in her later writings. The book is especially good in describing her second marriage and provides depth and texture to the life of one of the most popular writers of all time’ – Contemporary Review
‘Jared Cade is an acknowledged expert on Christianna and Agatha Christie and the Eleven Missing Days has received much acclaim for its impressively detailed examination of the Queen of Crime’s disappearance’ – Crime Time
*‘A brilliant job of research... Jared Cade has succeeded where all we other writers failed to trace what really happened to Agatha on the night of the disappearance’ *– Gwen Robyns, author of The Mystery of Agatha Christie
‘Jared Cade not only traces the disturbing events of the lost eleven days and their far-reaching repercussions; he also throws considerable light on the personality of a complex character, her sufferings (her second husband also deceived her), her frustrations, her achievements’ – Keswick Reminder
‘A wonderfully sympathetic and detailed biography requiring extensive research, which was made possible by a part of Agatha’s family, who were prepared to open up their archives and memories. Certainly a book that any real fan of Agatha should have; it still keeps her image as glowing as ever, but with the benefit of a deep human story’ – Vanessa Wagstaff
‘Jared Cade's new biography is valuable for the detail in which he examines her 11-day disappearance... His meticulously researched and interestingly illustrated volume is fascinating to read’ – Charles Osborne, author of The Life and Crimes of Agatha Christie
‘Jared Cade paints a brilliant picture of the tabloid press turning a disappearance and a possible murder hunt into a national jamboree, complete with day outings, picnics and all the pleasures of the chase. His book is a must’* – Robert Barnard, author of A Talent to Deceive: An Appreciation of Agatha Christie
‘This is the only biography that tells Agatha’s life story as it really was. Jared Cade’s insight into her personality is unsurpassed’ – Judith and Graham Gardner, relatives of Agatha Christie
